Construction for Athletic Facilities Makes Progress
Over the past few months, Riverdale has undergone construction on two key athletic facilities. First, the new Aquatic Center is under construction. In addition, the Zambetti Athletic Center will expand to two new gyms and a larger Health and Fitness Center in the building. The new Aquatic Center will finish in December 2016 and the construction on the Zambetti Athletic Center will be finished in September 2017.
The new Aquatic Center was built and designed by Shawmut Design and Construction, PBDW Architects, The Stone House Group, and Urban Projects Collaborative, LLC. The building's glass walls and neutral-tone materials will have a more modern look than other buildings on campus. The construction on the Aquatic Center has been broken up into a 17 step timeline. The initial steps: demolition and excavation were completed during the end of the last school year. During these steps, fences and trees were removed, the soil was tested, and the underground utilities were installed. Later on, the new structure was installed with the three step plan of building the foundation, placing down the concrete, and finishing with the steel construction. Now, the new Aquatic Center is undergoing construction on its exterior.
The construction on the swimming pool is the most recent step to have been completed, which is exciting news for the swim team because the pool is expected to be ready by the middle of the season. In addition, P.E. swim classes will take place in the new Aquatic Center once it is completed this winter.
The construction team is currently making great progress on the next few steps on the timeline. They are currently working on the framing and wall systems, as well as the roof. In addition to those exterior steps, the interior of the pool is improving. The equipment and supplies, such as lane lines, are currently being installed into the pool.
Up next will be the completion of the interior and the finishing touches. These finishing touches include painting the interior, finishing the utilities, which were previously installed in the excavation phase, and landscaping, which will make the outside of the new Aquatic Center look scenic and complete. After the signage is put up around the building, it will be complete and ready for use.
These recent developments are coming after last year’s major construction on the River Campus, where a new classroom building was built to replace the old Perkins Building. This new building was designed by Architecture Research Office and consists of a cafeteria, classrooms, and a theater. This new building was designed to have a contemporary feel. With large glass walls, the building is illuminated with natural light and a beautiful place for the students to learn. The new Aquatic Center, construction on the Zambetti Athletic Center, and new building on the River Campus will be a great change for Riverdale’s 27.5 acres.
