As the school year comes to an end, many students are excited to plan their summers. During the summer months in New York City, there is something for everyone to do! The following are just a few of many events that are worth checking out:
First, The Governors Ball Music Festival will take place on Randall's Island from June 3 to June 5. Some of this year's performers are Years & Years, Two Door Cinema Club, and Kanye West. This multi-day music festival has countless additional features such as photo booths and food trucks, where you and your group of friends can enjoy the warm summer air and some incredible music. Don't forget a pair of sunglasses, and please take note that all selfie sticks have been banned!
For all Shakespeare lovers, beginning on May 24 and concluding on June 26, Central Park will be hosting Shakespeare in the Park. This theater series will present your favorite Shakespearean plays. Tickets for this event can be retrieved online, free of charge.
If it is a hot day and you are looking for a splash (or an artsy picture to add to your Instagram feed), you should stroll by Central Park’s Loeb Boathouse. Here, you and a group of three friends can rent rowboats. After rowing through the scenic lake, try having lunch at the Loeb Boathouse Cafe. Rowboats may be rented all summer long from 10 AM to 5:30 PM at the Loeb Boathouse, which is located between East 74th and 75th streets.
Another free entertainment event occurring this summer will be the outdoor Summer Film Festival at Bryant Park. The festival will take place every Monday from 5 to 11 PM. The films playing this summer will be announced later this month. All movies will begin at sunset, and get excited for all of the delicious food. Do not forget your picnic blanket!
On Tuesday, June 14th, from 6 to 9 PM, you should stop by the annual Museum Mile Festival. All evening long, you can walk down Fifth Avenue and visit spectacular museums, including The Met, The Guggenheim, The Cooper Hewitt Museum, and many more for free! Additional entertainment and refreshments will be provided.
Sheep Meadow in Central Park is a charming location where you can enjoy a summer picnic. In addition to dining, I would suggest bringing a book and relaxing in the warm sun.
From May 5 to August 14, the Met Costume Institute will be displaying Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology. The exhibition features over 170 pieces of art, jewelry, and clothing from top fashion designers, showing the evolution of fashion manufacturing. After visiting the galleries, you can go up to the roof to dine at the Roof Garden Café, which has great views of Central Park.
Finally, from Djokovic to the Williams sisters, the US Open Tennis Championships returns to the New York. This two week tennis championship will take place from August 29 to September 11. Tickets will go on sale in early June and there will be a lot of food and musical entertainment available.
