Top Ten Sports Moments at Riverdale

There has been a plethora of defining moments in Riverdale athletics over the past year – too many to all be listed below. Therefore, for a moment to be included on this list it had to involve either winning a championship or beating Horace Mann. Beating Horace Mann was given precedent over almost everything else. Please give credit to all the phenomenal moments of the year which did not make the list and those which did not involve beating Horace Mann but still were great in their own way.

November 8th, 2015: Boys’ Soccer claimed their second NYSAIS soccer championship this year against UNIS at Manhattan College, making Riverdale the first of the Hill schools in the history of this tournament to repeat as champions in back-to-back years.  The seven seniors on this team provided leadership throughout the journey and wound up as champions.

April 4th, 2016: Girls’ basketball and boys’ basketball became two of only four teams in New York State to be recognized collectively as Academic All-State.

March 18th, 2016: In this great game, the baseball team did not start scoring until late in an away game against Fieldston. Suddenly, the baseball team began rattling off eight runs in the sixth inning. Baseball won 8-1 over the fellow hill school, and all 8 runs were scored in the 6th inning! They came close to breaking a record for runs in an inning.

January 15th, 2016: Girls’ basketball won 68-17 against The Spence School.

December 14th, 2015: Boys’ basketball beat Horace Mann 59-32.

October 10th, 2015: Trailing Horace Mann by one point, Field Hockey ended up winning 2-1 over the rival. (You may start to notice the theme to this list.)

April 4th, 2016: Ultimate Frisbee won 8-7 at Horace Mann to open their season.

May 5th, 2016: Boys’ tennis swept Horace Mann on the road. (Just down the road, to be accurate.) They avenged a grueling loss to this bitter rival just three weeks earlier in their season opener.

April 15th, 2016: Girls lacrosse won 8-7 at Staten Island with a clutch, game-winning shot with less than 9 seconds left in regulation. As if that feat was not impressive enough, an honorable mention goes to their more recent 11-10 win over CSH (Convent of the Sacred Heart) secured in the final minute of the game.

September 12th, 2015: Football team beat Horace Mann 28-8 in season opener. The Falcons scored on the first play from the scrimmage and continued scoring from that point onward.
