Trader Joe’s Fall Foods Frenzy: Understanding the Crave
Every year, as the leaves begin to turn, Gen Z flocks to Trader Joe’s, in search of the newest fall items to replenish their seasonal snack craving. With 10 bustling locations across the city, the Trader Joe’s fall snack selection is highly anticipated by New Yorkers in every neighborhood!
What makes these snacks so popular? According to one Trader Joe’s employee of their Upper West Side location, “because we have seasonal items, people get it while they can, so they buy an abundance of the item, that’s why they go out so fast.”
From maple swirl bread to pumpkin pasta, there is something for everyone. Based on trends Trader Joe’s employees have noticed, some of this year’s fall favorites include the pumpkin brioche bread, honeycrisp apple cider (a recent favorite), and one recent Trader Joe’s employee made sure to highlight, “the butternut squash mac and cheese, everyone was going crazy for that.” Elena Sethi, a Riverdale parent, understands the appeal, stating, “it sounds like a weird combination but it was really delicious!” Riverdale junior Zoe Beckman believes, “Trader Joe’s finds a way to make everything very creative, and very unique. Every single snack they have is branded in its own way…you can’t just find it anywhere.”
Trader Joe’s festive packaging and friendly employees add to the positive feeling consumers have while shopping. The art on the walls and leaf decorations around the store also help customers get into the seasonal spirit and encourage them to try a new fall food, if they weren’t planning to already.
By mid-October, about a month after their release, autumn staples such as pumpkin pie and the popular pumpkin brioche were already sold out of many Trader Joe’s locations. Workers have noticed these staples being swept off the shelves by New Yorkers throwing a halloween, “pumpkin-themed or thanksgiving themed event,” remarked one employee, and Trader Joe’s fall foods make the perfect centerpiece!
Trader Joe’s begins producing their fall snacks far in advance and once a store goes through its allocated amount, it’s gone! Zoe gave her opinion on what the source of the popularity of Trader Joe’s fall foods may be. She noticed, “there are certain items that go viral on Tiktok, you see them constantly every day and that spikes your interest in them.” As a result, New Yorkers walking past a Trader Joe’s may be surprised to find the long lines await them, forcing them to ask the question, are these snacks worth the wait?
Riverdale student Ella Atzil, is eager to try Trader Joe’s snacks but “I can’t wait on lines,” she says, “I like the idea of it though.” Even though they get a sneak peek before they stock the shelves, Trader Joe’s employees also “still get excited about the fall items…to get into the seasonal spirit,” and for them the countdown to falls starts up again as soon as winter snacks hit the shelves.
