Big Wins and Snubs From the 77th Emmy Awards
The 77th Emmy Awards took place this September, and they brought plenty of surprising wins and disappointments. From breakthrough stars to shocking losses, the Emmys gave us a lot to talk about.
The night’s biggest winner was The Studio, which dominated the comedy category with 13 wins. For a brand-new series to win so many Emmys is rare, making The Studio one of the most talked-about shows of 2025. Some viewers credit Seth Rogen’s vivid portrayal of Matt Remick as the reason for the series’ breakout, while others believe the show’s new take on workplace comedy was the driving force behind its success.
In the drama category, The Pitt claimed 9 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, with Noah Wyle receiving the award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama. The show follows a group of doctors working in an Emergency Room in Pittsburgh, with one-hour-long, realistic episodes. Junior Roxanne Goldman said, “If you enjoy Grey’s Anatomy, then The Pitt will be a perfect show for you.”
Later in the night, Adolescence swept the limited and anthology series categories. The show has only four episodes, all without cuts, giving it an unusual and eerie quality. The show’s star, Owen Cooper, became the youngest male actor to win an Emmy at just 15 years old. His win was one of the Emmys’ emotional moments, with the crowd, filled with experienced actors, giving the newbie a standing ovation. Critics praised Cooper for his raw performance, setting a high bar for other young actors.
Yet alongside these impressive wins, there were disappointments. The White Lotus and The Bear were considered strong contenders for multiple awards, but both shows walked away with none. “The White Lotus was robbed,” said senior Ava Loeb.
Another major surprise was that the second season of Squid Game was not nominated for any awards, which stunned audiences, mainly because of the immense success of the show’s first season. Many viewers, including junior Kara Wang, felt that the omission “showed how competitive the Emmys have become and how quickly shows can fall from the spotlight.” The 2025 Emmys reflect how television is evolving. The sweep from newcomers like The Studio, The Pitt, and Adolescence shows how innovative and new storytelling is being rewarded more than shows with past successes and recognition. The absence of wins from fan favorites goes to show that no show has a “guaranteed win.”
This year’s Emmys remind us that television is transitioning into a new era, one defined by fresh talent and stories that capture audiences in new ways.
