Buzzell Is Back: What to Expect in the 2026 Rematch
Buzzell returns on February 6th for its 74th annual game, continuing one of Riverdale’s most awaited traditions! Each year, Riverdale faces Horace Mann in a for-charity game full of intensity, noise, and school spirit. Both the Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity Basketball teams will enter their matches as defending champions, a position that comes with boosted confidence and high expectations.
Viewers supporting both Riverdale and Horace Mann anticipate a tight, competitive match from the girls. Led by senior captains Alara Bensusan and Matilda Sales, Riverdale’s girls’ team will look to play with control and consistency in an energetic environment. After last year’s success, basketball fans are faithful that the Falcons can once again prevail and keep their four year Buzzell win-streak alive.
Excitement for the boys’ game has also been extremely high, especially after their last matchup on January 16th, when Riverdale beat Horace Mann 42-35. Although the Falcons took home the win, Horace Mann’s crowded, boisterous, and relentless student audience absolutely demolished what can only be called Riverdale’s row of supporters. Nevertheless, Buzzell gives us the chance to showcase what unwavering pride and school spirit truly look like at Riverdale. In addition, spectators can expect Horace Mann’s players to demonstrate an aggressive mentality and playing style, which will add to the challenge. With seniors Nolan Weathers, Ryder Rasch, and Jack Moynahan as team captains, Riverdale students are eager to see how Riverdale responds to a larger and louder audience, as they seek to dominate the Horace Mann both in terms of points and attitude.
Buzzell is more than just a basketball game, and the event’s purpose extends further than the final result. The dance team’s performance adds to the hype, bringing energy that matches the intensity of the games and elevates the atmosphere in the gym. Along with a packed crowd and strong school spirit, Buzzell is both a competitive event and a celebration of Riverdale pride.
Buzzell always feels like a pause in the winter sports season where all aspects of Riverdale–students, athletes, performances, and energy—come together. It is a night that students and players truly look forward to in the winter season. It’s a kind of event people remember for years to come. There’s a lot of excitement and confidence for Riverdale’s win. Whether you’re an athlete, performer, or spectator, Buzzell is a true Riverdale experience.
