A Reader’s Guide to the Top 4 Ice Cream Spots in NYC

With the weather warming and summer approaching quickly, we all begin to crave the communal experiences that define summer. One of these summer staples is, of course, ice cream. Like many restaurant and food experiences, enjoying an ice cream with friends and family can create childhood memories that last a lifetime. To help you create new memories, included are our top four ice cream spots in New York City (in no particular order) that are known for their atmosphere, manufacturing process, and overall taste — all essential qualities to take into consideration when looking for a refreshing dessert during the summertime.

OddFellows Ice Cream Co.

Location: 44 Water St. Brooklyn, NY. OddFellows Ice Cream Co. was founded in 2011 and based in Brooklyn during its opening. OddFellows likens their ice cream to a person “driving 31 in a 25 and honking the horn the entire time.” Having created over 500 flavors of ice cream, OddFellows is known for their unconventional flavors of ice cream and their culture of creativity. While they do serve the conventional vanilla bean and cookies and cream ice creams, the pride they take in serving unusual flavors like miso peanut butter brownie ice cream, vegan coconut caramel chip, and raspberry rosé cider, making them unique as a company.

Davey’s Ice Cream

Location: 309 East 9th St. New York, NY. Davey’s Ice Cream, founded in 2013, is known for their lengthy production process. Based in the East Village, Davey’s Ice Cream sources their ingredients locally, which prompts the four day long preparation that goes into every ice cream flavor. A result of this unique process is the home-made ice cream flavors they serve including Speculoos Chocolate Chip, Strong Coffee, and Nutella Chocolate Chip. Retro-inspired, Davey’s interior is a visual representation of their old-fashioned production processes. Their ice cream flavors, however, are anything but old-fashioned, which creates an intriguing experience for those who indulge in Davey’s ice cream. Modern aspects of Davey’s Ice Cream’s business model include collaborating with local businesses and restaurants in order to create new flavors, and catering birthday parties, office events, etc. with their Sundae Bar. In addition to their unique atmosphere in-store, Davey’s Ice Cream takes pride in the ranging availability of their product as they recently incorporated nationwide shipping into their repertoire.

Emack and Bolio’s

Location: 1564 1st Ave. New York, NY. Emack and Bolio’s, founded in 1975, has a rich history of impact on the community. Their first shop was created in Boston by a music lawyer named Bob Rook as a place where musicians could go to relax and socialize after their concerts. Heavily influenced by the rock and roll and hippy culture of the seventies, Emack and Bolio’s has continued to incorporate the original atmosphere of the store into their locations outside of Boston and on their website. The website makes sure to incorporate the names of their flavors of ice cream (including their delicious fan-favorite Grasshopper Pie).

Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream

Location: 88 W Houston St, New York, NY. Morgenstern Finest Ice Cream is a go to spot for New Yorkers around the city. Located on Houston street in the West Village, this shop is owned by restauranter Nicholas Morgenstern. There are a vast variety of flavors ranging from Butter Pecan to Health Bar Mudslide. For fun night, Mr. Kingsley recommends “going to Morgenstern with friends, ordering different flavors, and sharing buffet style.”
